All Gamescom Info Summarized

Monday, August 31, 2009 by Amonbell

It's been one week since we had to leave the SWTOR booth and Gamescom. The convention and several interviews uncovered lots of new information, which we prepared in a neat overview for you now.

With so many new impressions, interviews and information it's hard to remember everything. That's why we summarized everything about servers, companion characters and the Sith Warrior for you.

Of course, one of the biggest announcement was the new Imperial class, who had already been shown at E3. We're talking about the Sith Warrior here. This punchy representative of the Dark Side could not only be seen in the demo cinemo, but was also played by us ourselves, so that there are some interesting news to tell:
  • The Sith Warrior was the first class designed by Bioware
  • The warrior's abilities are based on Darth Vader (as Force Choke and so on)
  • This melee fighter is able to specialize in attack/damage dealer (by using two lightsabers) or in defense/tank later on
  • The warrior wears heacy armor and concentrates on fighting only so that he won't support the group with buffs
  • By using the Force Leap the Sith Warrior is able to jump down several levels
  • His name leads to the assumption that there might be two Force classes on each side. Nothing is confirmed yet, the behavior of Richard Vogel when he showed us the demo denies the fact, but Daniel Erickson's Statement "He is a Sith Warrior, not Sith only" is in favor of the two Force classes idea

The second big announcement was made at the EA press conference, which especially served the needs of European players. Star Wars: The Old Republic will be released and completely localized in German and French.
  • The new German Community Manager is Hergen Thaens.
  • The new French Community Manager is Daniela Heine.
  • Sean confirmed in our interview that German and French servers are most likely
  • We will probably see no international boundaries, so that US players can play on EU servers and vice versa
The companion characters are going to be another important feature on which we got interesting new information.
  • As we asked for a healing class, Daniel Erickson did not reveal anything about that, but he said that they wouldn't need one since some of the companions have the ability to heal
  • Very important: Nobody is forced to run around with a companion, if you want to you can play the whole game without one
And of course there were also some general interesting news, which we don't want to keep from you:
  • The last demo cinema show was special. As the typical MMOG features were enumerated we also heard the word "housing". Therefore it's pretty likely that SWTOR will feature housing
  • Our interview with Daniel Erickson denies a long-lasting rumor: there will be no faction switch in the game
  • We will see many different reputation factions, but it hasn't been revealed which ones we will see.
  • The flashpoint showed us that NPCs react to the player character. For example, you are greeted by the soldiers as a Sith.
  • The multiplayer dialogue system is still not completed and being worked on since the simple dice system is not the best
  • Light sabers/weapons can be tucked onto your belt if you're not involved in a fight
  • The Sith from the demo version showed some nice new face scars. It is likely that we can customize our characters by such means.
